If you're dealing with ongoing gut issues like bloating, fatigue, or irregular bowel movements, this test can help uncover hidden infections. It screens for parasites, candida overgrowth, and other pathogens which may be throwing your system off balance.
About this Test
Your Microbiome and digestive system is home to many trillions of bacteria which make up the Gut Microbiome.
However, unwanted bacteria and parasites can find their way into the gut. While some parasites are harmless, others can cause diverse health issues.
One of the most researched and prominent pathogenic bacteria is Helicobacter pylori (H Pylori) which has been shown to damage tissue in the small intestine.
This parasitology test is a complete screen of:
- 22 of the most common parasites
- Viruses and pathogenic bacteria
- Candida Albicans screening for 6 different species
This test will also check for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) by measuring 2 Archea markers:
- Methanobrevibactor smithii (SIOBO marker)
- Methanosphaera stadtmanae (Immune activator)
(Sample must be returned to our Lab within 30 days of purchase).
When to Avoid Taking This Test
Do not take this test if you have experienced any of the following in the past four weeks:
- A course of antibiotics or steroid medication (inhalers are fine)
- Abdominal surgery
- A colonoscopy or endoscopy
- Pregnancy
In any of these cases, wait at least four weeks before taking the test to ensure the most accurate results, as these factors can temporarily disrupt the microbiome.
Symptoms
People with a parasite, bacteria or virus overgrowth will typically experience one or more symptoms, but not limited to:
Which foods cause parasites?
You may have a parasite or bacterial infection and no symptoms, or the symptoms may appear a long time after infection. You also might not display any symptoms, and accidentally pass a parasite to another person who develops symptoms.
- Common food sources of parasites include:
- Food Poisoning
- Unpasteurised milk and juices.
- Raw or undercooked meat, including fish.
- Raw or unwashed fruits and vegetables.
- Raw aquatic plants, such as watercress.
How do people get parasites?
Common causes of parasitic infections include:
- Sexual contact.
- Spending time in areas with known parasites.
- Contaminated water, foods, soil, blood or feces (poop).
- Not washing your hands before eating or drinking.
- Washing or bathing infrequently.
- Having a weak immune system.
- Contaminated bug bites.
Results
Typically provided within 3-4 weeks – Why so long?
All bacteria in the intestines are analysed one by one up to the genus level, and the genetic structures of these bacteria are examined in detail.
A genus is like a family name for bacteria.
In Escherichia coli, “Escherichia” is the genus, it shows which group or family that bacteria belongs to.
The species (like “coli”) is the individual member of that family. To learn more, click here

I’ve had gut health issues on and off for ages and after no luck from GP appointments, I knew I needed to take matters into my own hands. After a good friend passed on Iona’s details raving about the service, I instantly knew this was THE solution.
From my first point of contact, Iona was professional and friendly but more importantly empathetic and charismatic. The process is simple and you can tell Iona has put a lot of thought into streamlining the service.
Iona posted a test out to my home address and then once completed, I shipped to a lab for processing. The results came back quickly and detailed what foods were problematic and what foods weren’t.
This was exactly what I was looking for and what I tried to find for years. I can now look ahead and plan meals that won’t affect the rest of my day, my mood, my lifestyle.
Iona may just say she’s “doing her job” but she goes above and beyond to help her clients get back to feeling good and gaining some clarity over issues they’ve probably pushed aside in their busy lives.
If you’ve suffered with gut health please contact Iona today – highly recommend her and the service she provides!!

I went on a return trip to TESTme in Sept24 with my husband as he was having health problems. Hoping Iona can sort him out as she did me!
I went to Iona in June 2023 (over a year ago) suffering from migraines every fortnight which lasted 2-3 days. Having had every avenue explored by the doctor, including a brain scan, being told it is probably my age, etc., a friend then recommended Iona at TESTme Health. As anyone who suffers from migraines knows, one will try anything to stop them. Following the consultation and allergy test with Iona, I immediately went home and changed my diet – no dairy, no eggs and no gluten. To say it has been life-changing is an understatement. I’ve not had a migraine since – have had the odd headache when I didn’t read the labels and consumed something which contained gluten. I am fine with eggs now, having introduced them into my diet after 6mths. I’ve had dairy these past 4mths but only if I am out in a restaurant. Definitely not gluten as that is the root cause of my migraines from the one or two pitfalls I’ve had since June 2023. Well worth the trip and money which is why I have my husband attending this month so sort his health problems out too.

The turnaround for receiving results was exceptionally quick and not only was a detailed report provided but it was presented in a way that was easy to interpret and understand.
I really valued the follow-up from Iona. It was very insightful and the analogies she used were exceptionally effective, allowing me to gain a greater understanding.
I thoroughly appreciated the personal attention Iona gave to understanding my health history. She genuinely took the time to listen and consider both my past and present concerns, which made her recommendations feel personalised and relevant to me.
This has really motivated and inspired me to take the time to follow the clear actionable recommendations that Iona has given me to improve my health. It has made me feel more confident and empowered to do so.
The service Iona provides is truly invaluable and I would thoroughly recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking to understand and/or improve their health.

FAQ’s
1. Why am I always hungry?
Certain parasites, like tapeworms, consume nutrients from your food before your body can absorb them, leaving you feeling constantly hungry. Some infections can also interfere with blood sugar regulation, making you crave more food than usual.
2. Do parasites cause bloating?
Yes, parasites can lead to bloating by disrupting digestion and causing inflammation in the gut. They can also produce gas as they break down food, leading to discomfort and distension.
3. Can a parasite make me overweight?
While parasites are more commonly associated with weight loss due to malabsorption of nutrients, some can cause weight gain. They may trigger inflammation, slow metabolism, and lead to cravings for sugar and processed foods, which can contribute to weight gain.
4. Will a virus or bacteria make me stressed or anxious?
Yes, gut infections, including those caused by bacteria and viruses, can impact your mental health. The gut and brain are connected via the gut-brain axis, meaning an imbalanced gut microbiome can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and stress.
5. Do parasites cause constipation or diarrhoea?
Yes, both can be symptoms of a parasite infection. Some parasites irritate the gut lining, leading to diarrhoea, while others can slow digestion and cause constipation. Chronic or alternating bowel issues may be a sign of an infection.
6. Is fatigue a sign of a parasite or bacterial infection?
Yes, infections can lead to fatigue due to nutrient depletion, immune system activation, and inflammation. Parasites in particular can drain your energy by consuming essential vitamins and minerals, leaving you feeling tired and sluggish.
