What is a food intolerance (IgG)

A food intolerance* (or maybe you know it as a food sensitivity?) is an adverse reaction to certain foods we eat. This reaction is directly measured by analysing an antibody called immunoglobulin G or IgG, which is in association with an immune response.

This may be due to chronic inflammation, a microbiome imbalance or other factors which compromise the gut lining, commonly known as ‘leaky gut’ (intestinal permeability). When this happens, larger undigested food particles can enter the bloodstream, triggering an immune response. Over time, this can lead to ongoing inflammation, which can show up in a wide range of symptoms which can vary from person to person

About this Test

Our best-selling food intolerance test kit can be done at home. Once completed, simply send your sample to our UK lab for analysis.

Please be aware:
If you’ve avoided certain foods for more than eight weeks, your body may no longer produce detectable antibodies to those foods. This means some foods you’ve reacted to in the past, (like peanuts or shellfish), may not show up as a positive result if you haven’t eaten them recently.

We do not recommend reintroducing foods you know you react to (e.g. gluten if you have coeliac disease), as this can trigger symptoms and won’t give a true picture of your current responses. If you decide to include a food before testing, eat it 1 or 2 days before taking the test.

This test is NOT suitalbe for the following:

  • Under 2 years old
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you have been taking immunosuppressants for 8 weeks or more (feel free to get in touch with specific immunosuppressant medications to see if they impact the test).
  • Have been using steroid medication for 8 weeks or more (inhalers and creams are fine).

This test must be returned to our lab within 30 days of purchase for the most accurate results.

Symptoms

  • Bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, IBS**
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Eczema, rashes, acne, hives
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Joint Pain
  • Respiratory symptoms and more

Results

Results are published and available within 5 working days of your sample reaching the lab. These will be sent to you by email and presented in an easy-to-follow traffic light system along with the TESTme Handbook

The colour coded scheme of results helps identify which foods to avoid, limit and consume.

  • Red Foods are advised to be avoided and replaced for 12 weeks
  • Amber foods can be consumed as treats on a weekend or part of a 4 day rotation cycle
  • Blue foods are safe to consume (unless you have been told you are “allergic” to that food).

Our Food Intolerance Test Kit will check for 270 Allergens.

This includes all the major food groups, along with some of the most common food allergens such as fruits, vegetables, meat, nuts, legumes and much more.

This test is used Internationally, so there are also several novel foods included. These are often used by food manufacturers as colourings, flavour enhancers or preservatives. Additionally, some are used as treatments in medications, or include ingredients which are used in health products or topical creams, and can be notoriously tricky to identify. These include some of the following;

  • Greater burdock root (Topical remedy for skin problems such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis)
  • Guarana (A popular ingredient in brands like Monster Energy®, Rockstar Energy®, Red Bull®)
  • Maca root (A common ingredient in porridges, empanadas, and soups. It can be fermented into beer or ground into flour for baked goods.
  • Migratory locust & House cricket (Can be found in items like bread, pasta, crisps and nachos)!
  • Mealworm (They are often found in cereal, flour, baking products, and other dry foods and grains. (Signs you have a mealworm infestation in your stored food would be small holes in food packaging)
  • Nori (Commonly used as a wrap for sushi and onigiri (Japanese rice balls)
  • Yacón root (Yacon is a root vegetable from Peru, similar to a parsnip)
  • Transglutaminase meat glue ( transglutaminase enzyme plays a crucial role in meat processing, elevating the quality, texture, and appearance of meat products)

What Causes a Food Intolerance?

Food intolerances are often linked to our favourite foods, especially the ones we eat in high amounts. This overexposure can overwhelm the immune system, triggering an inflammatory response which shows up as symptoms.

There are however several other factors to consider:

  • How our food is processed today
  • The process by which we rear and feed our animals
  • The use of fertilisers in the farming process
  • Overuse of antibiotics and other medications
  • Genetics
  • Stress, both physical and emotional
  • An imbalanced Gut Microbiome
  • Leaky gut syndrome
  • Lack of variety in diet
  • Lack of fibre in diet

It’s estimated around 45% of the UK population suffer from adverse reactions to food***

Unlike a food ‘Allergy’ which is an instant immune response which can be life threatening, a food intolerance will typically lead to less severe symptoms and can carry up to a 72 hour delay, leading to a potential delay in symptoms. This is why food intolerances are notoriously tricky to spot without testing.

Research shows that those who follow a guided elimination diet based on IgG food intolerance testing can see the below improvements within 3 weeks in some cases****

  • Bloating: 82%
  • Digestive Health: 80%
  • Lung Function: 72%
  • Neurological Conditions: 78%
  • Skin Conditions: 76%
  • Joint Pain/Issues: 64%
  • Mind Health: 81%

Can removing my food triggers improve my sports performance or fitness?*****

When we talk about food intolerance, it’s essentially the immune system responding to undigested food particles, something which can drain a lot of the body’s energy. Since around 70% of the immune system lives in the gut microbiome, this response can be significant. By removing trigger foods, we reduce this immune burden, freeing up energy which could instead support better sports performance

One study on an elite football team found the following improvements after 12 weeks on a food intolerance elimination diet:

  • Improved cardiovascular efficiency
  • 50% increase in distance covered on field
  • 25% in calories expelled
  • 18% increase in number of accelerations
  • 7% increase in maximum speed
  • Reduced Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
Food Intolerance/Sensitivity Disclaimer

*A food intolerance/sensitivity is defined as a food specific IgG response. The reaction is measured through IgG responses to foods to help overcome problems associated with adverse delayed immune reactions to food. TESTme does NOT claim to cure any associated diseases or condition, and always recommend consulting with a GP before undertaking our programme.

**IBS – Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition affecting the digestive system. It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, but can last for days, weeks or months at a time. It’s usually a lifelong problem, can be very frustrating to live with and can have an impact on everyday life.
