About Dundee
Dundee is THE perfect place to explore Scotland from. It’s slap bang in the middle, making it easy to venture out to nearby places like St Andrews and Perthshire as well as cities including Edinburgh or Aberdeen.
Dundee, located on the north bank of the River Tay on Scotland’s east coast, is a city renowned for its innovation, creativity, and rich industrial heritage. Often referred to as the “City of Discovery,” Dundee has a long-standing reputation for pioneering achievements in science, technology, and design. The nickname honors the RRS Discovery, the research ship used by Captain Scott for his Antarctic expedition, which is now preserved and displayed at Discovery Point, one of the city’s most iconic attractions.
Historically, Dundee was a major center for the jute industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city’s industrial prominence was built around the “three Js”—jute, jam, and journalism. While the jute mills were the backbone of Dundee’s economy, the city was also known for its production of marmalade and as the home of DC Thomson, a publishing company responsible for beloved publications like The Beano and The Dandy.
In recent years, Dundee has reinvented itself as a cultural and creative hub. The opening of the V&A Dundee in 2018, Scotland’s first design museum and the only V&A museum outside London, has transformed the city’s waterfront and attracted global attention. The striking building, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, reflects Dundee’s ambition to blend its historical roots with a forward-thinking, artistic vision.
Dundee is also known for its contributions to the fields of biomedical research and video game development. The University of Dundee and Abertay University are globally recognized for their research and innovation, particularly in life sciences and computer games technology. In fact, some of the world’s most popular video games, like Grand Theft Auto, originated from Dundee’s gaming industry.
Beyond its industrial and cultural landmarks, Dundee offers a vibrant social scene, with bustling cafes, restaurants, and music venues. The city’s elevated location on the banks of the Tay provides stunning views across the estuary, and nearby attractions like the Law Hill—a volcanic plug rising above the city—offer panoramic vistas. Dundee is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Angus countryside and the picturesque towns along the east coast of Scotland.
