Teija came to TESTme a few years ago with some debilitating symptoms. After identifying food triggers, she was able to conquer her symptoms and continues to visit Iona every so often to keep on top of things.
What prompted you to take a test Teija?
Teija: I woke up in the middle of the night one time years ago with my skin itching so badly it was driving me crazy and I couldn’t get back to sleep. I spent the rest of the night researching online to see what could help my eczema and discovered it could be my diet.
At that time I had terrible eczema from head to toe, bloating, gas and stomach pain that nothing would ease. So after some research I decided to investigate food, as all the research was pointing in that direction.
TESTme seemed to tick a lot of the boxes I was looking for in terms of answers and some personal support.

Were there any surprises with the results or did you already suspect a few food triggers?
Teija: I definitely knew dairy and eggs were going to come up, I’d just been ignoring it for years. Tomatoes and oranges were a surprise though!
Iona: How did you find the elimination process, and how long did you eliminate foods for?
Teija: I eliminated the foods for about 5 to 6 months initially, though this was a few years ago.
I will say that the elimination process was difficult at first, especially trying to cut out tomatoes and soya, I found them in just about everything, it felt like! I was used to reading ingredients lists though, as I’ve been allergic to nuts my whole life.
Iona: What changes did you notice, how long did they take, and how do you feel now?
Teija: Within 2 weeks of my first test all of my eczema was gone for the first time (I think) in my life!
I’ve been back for a few re-tests over the years just to make sure I’m keeping on top of things, though I can normally tell when there’s a change in my triggers. My skin is still pretty good now, and my stomach hasn’t flared up anywhere near as much as it used to.
Iona: How did you find the service at TESTme?
Teija: Iona was brilliant, I was guided through everything, recommended supplements, shown how my gut microbiome works. It wasn’t just a simple test and you’re sent away. She really goes into detail and makes sure you know exactly what’s going on – why and how to make sure you’re making the best out of your diet.

What would you say to others considering getting tested?
Teija: If you think there’s something in your diet that’s causing problems, or if you have eczema, just go and get tested and try eliminating. It’s truly amazing how much your diet and gut affects everything else in your body.
It’s also not always the case that you never eat your trigger foods. It’s possible through trial and error that you can reintroduce, even if it’s small amounts.
Iona is really friendly and you won’t leave with any questions unanswered. I can’t believe how much a non invasive test changed my life!
