TESTme’s Oral Microbiome Test Kit

How the Oral Microbiome is Connected to Human Health, from Heart Disease to Alzheimers, The Oral Microbiome is Key!

There’s a lot more going on in your mouth than most people realise. Your oral microbiome is a community of bacteria living in your mouth, which play a major role in your whole-body health.

From blood pressure, brain fog and chronic inflammation, to bad breath and bleeding gums, the signs of an imbalanced oral microbiome are often unknown and overlooked. This simple at-home saliva test gives you a full picture of your oral bacteria. What’s thriving, what’s struggling, and how that might be disrupting your overall health.

What is The Oral Microbiome?

Your mouth is home to a huge community of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. They live on your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, tonsils, and the roof of your mouth.

It’s a warm, moist environment, and your saliva provides everything these microbes need to thrive – nutrients, enzymes, and the right PH balance.

The oral microbiome is the second most diverse in the body after the gut. There are over 700 different species and around 2 billion bacteria in the mouth at any one time. Some of these are even shared with the gut.

What is Oral Biofilm (Plaque)?

Plaque is a biofilm. A sticky, colourless layer of bacteria which constantly forms on your teeth and gums. It’s how bacteria protect themselves and stick around, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

This biofilm isn’t just sitting there quietly. The bacteria inside it produce acids and enzymes which can weaken tooth enamel, irritate the gums, and eventually affect the bone underneath. If it’s not removed regularly, plaque hardens into tartar, which is much harder to get rid of, and increases the risk of gum disease.

There are two types of plaque:

  • Supragingival plaque builds up above the gumline and is mostly made up of acid-producing bacteria like Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, the kind which cause cavities.
  • Subgingival plaque forms below the gumline, where there’s less oxygen and more inflammation. This allows bacteria like Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes to thrive, the same types linked to gum disease, inflammation, and systemic health issues.
Why it Matters

We’ve been trained to think of oral health as just brushing and flossing, but your mouth is connected to far more than just your teeth.

When oral bacteria fall out of balance, they can slip past your gum barrier into the bloodstream triggering inflammation throughout the body.

Once those bacteria (and the inflammation they trigger) enter circulation, they can affect the entire body. Research shows strong links between oral bacteria and serious health conditions, including:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Pregnancy complications
Systemic Complications

In some cases, specific oral bacteria have even been found in arterial plaque, joint tissue, and the brain.

This is why oral health isn’t just about brushing and flossing — it’s a key part of understanding what’s happening throughout the body.

Understanding your oral microbiome can help you spot early signs of imbalance, often before symptoms show up elsewhere in the body.

Subtle shifts in your mouth can reflect wider issues with inflammation, immunity, or gut health, making it a useful place to start when you’re trying to get to the root of unexplained symptoms.

I’ve had gut health issues on and off for ages and after no luck from GP appointments, I knew I needed to take matters into my own hands.
This was easier said than done with lots of companies over-promising and under-delivering. I ended up pressing pause on finding a solution.
After a good friend passed on Iona’s details raving about the service, I instantly knew this was THE solution.
From my first point of contact, Iona was professional and friendly but more importantly empathetic and charismatic. The process is simple and you can tell Iona has put a lot of thought into streamlining the service.
Iona posted a test out to my home address and then once completed, I shipped to a lab for processing. The results came back quickly and detailed what foods were problematic and what foods weren’t.
This was exactly what I was looking for and what I tried to find for years. I can now look ahead and plan meals that won’t affect the rest of my day, my mood, my lifestyle.
Iona may just say she’s “doing her job” but she goes above and beyond to help her clients get back to feeling good and gaining some clarity over issues they’ve probably pushed aside in their busy lives.
If you’ve suffered with gut health please contact Iona today – highly recommend her and the service she provides!!

I went on a return trip to TESTme in Sept24 with my husband as he was having health problems. Hoping Iona can sort him out as she did me!
I went to Iona in June 2023 (over a year ago) suffering from migraines every fortnight which lasted 2-3 days. Having had every avenue explored by the doctor, including a brain scan, being told it is probably my age, etc., a friend then recommended Iona at TESTme Health. As anyone who suffers from migraines knows, one will try anything to stop them. Following the consultation and allergy test with Iona, I immediately went home and changed my diet – no dairy, no eggs and no gluten. To say it has been life-changing is an understatement. I’ve not had a migraine since – have had the odd headache when I didn’t read the labels and consumed something which contained gluten. I am fine with eggs now, having introduced them into my diet after 6mths. I’ve had dairy these past 4mths but only if I am out in a restaurant. Definitely not gluten as that is the root cause of my migraines from the one or two pitfalls I’ve had since June 2023. Well worth the trip and money which is why I have my husband attending this month so sort his health problems out too.

We went to visit Iona at TESTme and have never looked back!
Both of us came away with a huge amount of knowledgeable, and were very well advised on how to approach our eating habits going forward.
The advice we received has been absolutely priceless, both of us, now 9 months on feel so so much better, in our physical bodies, our gut health and energy levels, along with one thing in particular.. My husband had very bad asthma since he was a young child and needed inhalers constantly, he now barely even uses one, this is life changing for him and i no longer hear him wheezing, coughing etc.
He also had huge issues with stomach cramps to the extreme that he had to take a lot of time off work during these spells. This has all stopped, thanks to Iona’s testing and advice.
I had a constant cough, sore joints and a constant sore tummy, this has now all cleared up, i had a feeling what i was eating had a lot to do with it but no idea where to start on getting it sorted out. Again, thanks to Iona’s advice, those issues have cleared up and i now know what to do to keep myself in better health.
We cannot recommend Iona enough to anyone who is thinking of going to get checked. HONESTLY those little niggly things your Dr isn’t getting to the bottom of, could be food related, go book a test now!

FAQ’s

  • What exactly is the oral microbiome?
The oral microbiome is the community of bacteria, fungi and microbes living in your mouth. These microbes help protect your teeth and gums, support your immune system, and even influence things like blood pressure, mood, and digestion.

Why should I test my oral microbiome?
Because it’s often overlooked! Imbalances in the oral microbiome can contribute to everything from bad breath and bleeding gums to heart disease, Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure, and autoimmune issues. This test helps you spot problems early, before symptoms get worse.

How do I take the test?
It’s a simple saliva sample you collect at home, no clinic visit needed. Just follow the instructions in your kit, pop it in the prepaid return envelope, and post it back to the lab.

Is this test suitable if I’ve had dental work, like fillings or root canals?
Yes, it can actually be really useful. Dental work can alter your oral microbiome, so this test can help you see what effect it’s had and whether your oral microbiome needs support.

    How accurate is the test?
We use advanced lab analysis and DNA sequencing to identify the key bacteria in your mouth. The lab provides highly reliable results and insights based on current microbiome science.

When will I get my results?
Once your sample reaches the lab, your results are typically ready in 2–3 weeks. You’ll receive an email with your full report and easy-to-understand recommendations.

Can this test help with bad breath?
Yes. Bad breath is often a sign of bacterial imbalance in the mouth. This test can help identify the specific microbes involved, and suggest ways to bring things back into balance.

    Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we do. Wherever you are, we can send the test kit to your door.
